Silkmead is a manufacturing Company first registered in 1966 that has specialised in the production of Manipulated Tubular products. A new product, the machine tool division was added in 1996. The company has been based in Dunstable for the past eighteen years and occupies some 22,000 square feet. Turnover is acquired from a wide range of industries including Automotive, Domestic Appliance, Gas, Heat exchange and Aerospace.

The manipulated tube facilities consist of CNC Bending. End Forming, Swaging, and Coiling together with all types of welding facilities including a belt feed, controlled atmosphere Furnace Brazing facility. Quality approval is to BS EN IS09002 with TS 16949 in the preparation stages. A culture of total quality management and its derivative continuous product improvement is firmly established.

About Grahame Herbert

Grahame Herbert is a multi-talented designer whose range of experience encompasses many building projects for prestige clients, architectural competitions, including a submission for the Millennium Bridge, and a long held interest in the design of folding bicycles.

Transportation issues have been of interest to him for many years and In the early seventies the Ford Motor Company gave serious consideration to his combination car concept, which was aimed at reducing today's serious traffic congestion. In recent times he has volunteered radical proposals to the Transport Group for London to transform the London bus system into a more useful overground alternative to the underground.

The Re-launch of AF bicycles

Grahame Herbert was recommended to approach Silkmead by the "Technology Exchange" in order to commercialise his latest design. The design has been further developed and refined over a two year period and prototypes now conform to BS 6102 part 1. The resultant 4 Speed AF1  folding bike has been widely acclaimed by experts and selected retailers.
